Uroš Rojko, born in 1954 in Ljubljana, Slovenia, studied composition (in the class of Prof. Uroš Krek) and clarinet in his home town. After graduating from the Academy of Music in Ljubljana, he went on to study with Klaus Huber in Freiburg from 1983 until 1986 and with György Ligeti in Hamburg from 1986 until 1989.
For his studies abroad he received a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service DAAD, his early artistic affirmation was facilitated by grants from the Heinrich Strobel Foundation SWR 1990, 2000 , 2004, 2014 and from the Artists' residence Schreyahn 1993/94.
His development was documented by international prizes such as the Award of the City of Stuttgart 1984, the Alban Berg Prize 1985 in Vienna, the Premio Europa 1985 in Rome, the Gaudeamus Award 1986 in Amsterdam, the Music Protocol Award 1987 in Graz, “Prešeren” cultur fondation prize of slovenia 1988, a prize at the international Composers' Competition for 1991 in Vienna and the first prize at the Choral Competition of the German Music Council in 2001, “Župančič« artistic prise of Ljubljana 2012.
His success was further validated by an international array of commissioned works for Donaueschinger Musiktage 1988, Musikprotokoll Graz 1990, Akyoshidai Music Festival 1996 in 1997, Berliner Biennale 1997, Radio France, Paris 1999 (Percussions de Strasbourg), Bayerische Staatsoper München 2003; Slovenian Radiosinfonie Orchestra 1993, 2008, Slovene Philharmonic Orchestra 1999, 2004, 2013. Theater Freiburg 2005, Warshaw Autumn 2007 and 2013, festival Fünf plus Fünf Berlin 2015, commissioned work by Ensemble Modern 2015. 2016, commissioned work by BBS London and National Youth Orchestra of Great Britten (NYO): Iris ter Schiphorst in collaboration with Uros Rojko composed GRAVITATIONAL WAVES for 164 headed Orchestra (Aldeburgh - Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Birmingham - Symphony Hall, London - BBC Proms, Royal Albert Hall)
His works were performed at the summer courses of Neue Musik Darmstadt 1984, 1986, 1988, 2004, 2016; in 1988, at Musica del Nostro Tempo 1986 in Milan (Arditti - Quartet), the Zagreb Biennale 1998 and 2001, at IRCAM in Paris (Ensemble Intercontemporain) 1987 and 1989, at the ISCM World Music Days Honk-Kong 1988, Oslo 1990, Stockholm 1994, Bukarest 1999, Ljubljana 2003, Basel 2004, Stuttgart 2006, Vilnius 2008, Zagreb 2011, Ljubljana 2015; the "Music of the 20th Century " in Saarbrücken 1994 and 1995, and the PALIMSEST - Hörgänge 2001 at the Vienna Concert House, „Ars Nova“ 2002 Rottenburg/N, “IKONEN” of 20. Century- Graz 2003, “ECLAT” Festival Neue Musik - Musik der Jahrhunderte - Stuttgart 2004, “Pablo Casals Festival” in Prades 2004, “Klangspuhren-Schwaz” in Innsbruck 2004, Festival “Klangwerk 2004” im E-WERK in Freiburg, Freiburg concert abonement Ensemble Recherche 2004 (with Experimentalstudio of Heinrich-Strobel-fondation of SWR, Internationalle Weingartener Musiktage 2009 (composerin residence – Uros Rojko), Zagreb Biennale 2010, 2013, Festival aXes Krakow 2012, 2013, 2014 etc.
In 1995 he became professor of composition at the Academy of Music in Ljubljana. Since 2013 he is living in Berlin and Ljubljana. Since 2015 he is a member of Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
